Coxabengoa awarded the largest desalination plant in Taiwan
The complete plant will produce up to 200,000 cubic meters of water per day that will be able to satisfy the drinking water needs of one million people and will employ 200 people at the peak of its construction.

- Thanks to its proven experience in water resources management, the multinational achieves its first award in the country and thus reinforces its portfolio and leadership position in Asia and the Middle East.
- Since the award of Abengoa's assets to the Cox Group last year, Coxabengoa has worked to reorganize the business and assets and transform the company into a global water and energy utility.
- Coxabengoa is one of the most relevant companies in the world in the desalination sector, responsible for more than 10% of the world's installed capacity with four million cubic meters of daily supply.
Coxabengoa, a vertically integrated global water and energy utility , reinforces its global leadership position in the water desalination sector by winning the award for phase 1 of what will be the largest desalination plant in Taiwan, with a capacity of 200,000 meters cubic per day, located in Tainan, a city in the south of Taiwan. With this capacity, the plant will be able to supply drinking water to one million people, in a country with a great need for water for human consumption, as well as satisfy the water needs for the semiconductor industry on the island.
The project contemplates the execution and operation for 15 years of a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant for the Southern Region Water Resources Branch, Water Resources Agency, Ministry of economic Affairs (Taiwan), as the final client.
The construction and start-up of the plant, which will employ 200 people at the time of greatest intensity of the process, will be carried out in two phases. In phase 1, the capacity to supply 100,000 cubic meters of water per day will be reached and it will be prepared for the second phase in which 200,000 cubic meters will be reached.
Leaders in water resources management
Since the award of Abengoa's assets by Grupo Cox in April 2023, the Coxabengoa team has worked to reorganize the business and assets and transform the company into a global water and energy utility . Thus, the infrastructure/transmission lines areas have been integrated, together with the Operation and Maintenance area, to support the Group's main businesses.
In addition to the awarding of the desalination plant in Taiwan, it is worth noting that Coxabengoa has put into operation one of the great milestones in the sector. This is Taweelah, the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in the world, located in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). With a production of almost one million m 3 /day, Taweelah guarantees supply to approximately four and a half million people throughout the year. Taweelah is the first large-scale plant in the emirate that combines the production of drinking water with the generation of clean energy, thanks to the installation of a 70 MWp photovoltaic installation, which allows the desalination plant to be self-sufficient in renewable energy.
